Printmaking does not feel like other art forms given how the process can be more extensive and challenging, but that’s what makes it so fun – the journey and development. Digital imaging, chemistry, maintenance, and equipment setup all lend to my appreciation for printmaking.
I was taken aback by the different methods that came with printmaking: monoprint, collagraph, serigraph, intaglio, lithography, relief, letterpress. The technicality of this art form left me in awe as well. I had the opportunity to learn many things. From rendering images into photoshop for halftones to transfer to a limestone, to have an understanding of the chemistry to etch a copper plate with nitric acid; truly, what I came to love about printmaking is how it is both a creative and technical form of art.
My undergraduate work delved into issues of immigration. Utilizing a range of drawing and printmaking techniques, I shared my family’s immigrant experience, giving voice to the underrepresented in this desperate time for humanity. Through the printmaking program, I have come to cherish the importance of community and the power of my voice. Printmaking astounds me given how I can expand my imagination and mind to a vast audience.
